FLAG BEACH KITESURFING CENTRE

Welcome to Flag Beach Kitesurfing Centre. We have been teaching kitesurf since 1999 and over the years have developed a very efficient teaching method which involves running courses downwind using 6 metre semi ridged inflatable boats. Our 3 boats are all equipped with first aid kits, VHF radios, mobile phones and all have 90 HP engines. This gives up the flexibility to teach kiting anywhere around the northern tip of Fuerteventura regardless of the wind direction. This also means that there is no walking back upwind as anytime spent in the water is 100% in the water. We are a VDWS recognized centre offering the kite qualification and our instructors are also IKO certified so we are able to offer the IKO Kiteboarder card.

BEGINNER KITE COURSE - DAY 2

During the second the lesson is given in the open water with the boat assistance at all times. This teaching method allows the student to practice safely, without obstacles and the need of going upwind along the beach.

Water lesson is split up into two parts. The first part in the water is learning to body drag. That means putting all the maneuvers that you were taught the day before into practice and using the kite to go across the water down wind / up wind and how to relaunch the kite from the water after you crash it.
Firstly, every exercise will be demonstrated by the instructor, who will then pass the kite over to you and hold onto you while you show them the exercises then finally you will get to practice by yourself and get comfortable with being alone with a kite.
Your second session in the water is spent with the board. As before first you will hold onto the instructor while he demonstrates the techniques to you, then he will hold onto you until you are ready to practice and improve by yourself.

BEGINNER KITE COURSE - ADDITIONAL DAYS*

On the additional days added to basic 2 day kite course you will go straight into the water and straight onto the board. We focus on teaching you whatever is needed to get you to an independent level. These days are also split into two, as with the 2nd day of the beginner course, but both times in the water are spent with the board.

*To really master kitesurfing it is always best to practice as much as possible. I you are committed to learning this wonderful sport we advise that you go on and take 5 days or more.

On 1 boat there will be up to 6 students with 3 instructors and 3 kites (shared water time).

The intermediate kite course is designed for anyone that has some previous kitesurfing experience or has done a kitesurfing course in the past, but doesn’t ride on a board yet.
Boardwork kite course is designed for people that know how to control the kite with one hand easily, how to perform a waterstart and are able to ride at least 50 meters.

INTERMEDIATE KITE COURSE - DAY 1

We start the course with an hour recap on the beach. This is dependent on your level, it could be flying one of our special training kites on the beach or running over body drag technique and body position to even simulating water starts for the more advanced.
Once this has been completed we head off into the water lesson which is split into two parts. The first attempt is, again, dependent on your level this could be body dragging or it could be straight onto a board. Either way first the instructor will demonstrate the exercises you need to practice with you holding onto their harness, then you will practice them with the instructor holding onto you until you are capable and safe to be left alone to practice and get comfortable being alone with a kite.
Your second time in the water will be straight with the board. If this is your first time trying the board it will work as before, first the instructor and you, then you and the instructor then you alone.

INTERMEDIATE KITE COURSE - ADDITIONAL DAYS

Each additional day works the same as the 1 day intermediate (without the hour on the beach). You go straight into the water and straight onto the board.

PRIVATE KITESURFING COURSE

Private kitesurfing courses are for the advanced rider wanting to learn turns, jumps, rotations etc. Private courses are not recommended to any kitesurfer who cannot go upwind.

When running a private hour the instructor may either be on a kite himself, doing a ‘follow the leader’ style lesson, or may swim after the student and have them kite away from him and back to him. If the instructor does use a kite always kites around the student and keeps at the minimum safe distance so that the student can see what the instructor is doing and hear the instructions too. Private hours are only given by the most experienced instructors with 5+ years of experience.

Beginner Kitesurfing Course - theory lesson

We have created a written version of the kitesurfing theoretical lesson in order to give a better preparation for our future and past students. The main aim of this lesson is to introduce the students of our kite school to the whole concept of this wonderful sport. At the beginning we like to look at the 4 important questions:

Firstly, who can kite surf?

EVERYONE can do kitesurfing. Like all sports anyone can do it within their own fitness level. Of course kitesurfing is a sport so is physically demanding to some level and you will need to use some energy.  But like every sport you just need to take it easy at the beginning and learn it step by step…

Secondly, what is kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing is using the power generated when flying a kite to pull you and a board across the water so the board can plane over the surface of the water. We do not use the kite to LIFT us onto the board and also diving the kite and keeping it still at 45 angle going along is not kitesurfing, this is riding overpowered. Real kitesurfing involves the technique of generating power with the kite to continue moving.

At last, Where and When can we kitesurf?

Kitesurfing can be done anywhere as long as it is permitted by local authorities and there is enough space, which means that you should have at least 50 m wide beach, possibly without obstacles on it to avoid any collision. Also, in order to kitesurf and stay safe you need to choose a spot with right wind condition. This will be covered in a later section.

Note: at some beaches you will find people kitesurfing but there is no possibility to take lessons because of the local law.

So what do we need to kitesurf? There are 3 vital things, what do you think they are?

  1. Wind.
  2. Space.
  3. Water.

WIND AND ITS QUALITIES

There are three things we need to know about the wind:

·       Direction

·       Speed

·       Consistency

THE WIND DIRECTION

wind direction kitesufing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventuraWe basically have 3 different directions of the wind: side shore, on shore, off shore plus some variation of those three: side off and side on shore wind. All of them are different in respect to the shore and offer different kiting condition.

On shore wind - it is the most dangerous wind to learn in as you can endanger yourself and others on the beach. The reason for this is that 95% of all kitesurfing accidents happened on the shore and with this wind direction you will struggle to go out and away from the shore to practice safely with your kite.

Off shore wind – this wind direction is also not suitable for kiting since it will certainly bring you away from the shore and you will have problems with coming back.

Side shore wind – this wind direction is perfect for learning. With this wind you can easily go away from the shore using your kite (body dragging technique) and practice all maneuvers free from any obstacles. As you practice the wind will take you along the beach, you will end up downwind to the point where you started and then you will need to walk upwind to start again.

Flag beach - kite spot overview

flag beach kitesurfing spot north fuerteventuraIf there was a westerly wind at flag beach, what direction would that be? Can you kitesurf at Flag Beach with a westerly wind?

The answer is NO! In the case of flag beach the westerly wind means off shore wind in the direction to Africa, so unless you have a valid visa and your passport on you, don’t go out kiting on a westerly wind in flag beach. We will cover the topic of wind direction in a moment.

Note: Here at flag beach school we give kite lessons also with off shore wind only because we have 3 boats at our disposal. This teaching method makes the lesson perfect no matter where the wind is coming from, because we always can bring you back to the shore after your lesson.

wind force speed kitesufing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventura

THE WIND SPEED

What do you think the minimum wind speed we need is just to fly an inflatable kite?

10Kts is the minimum, just for the kite to fly but, of course, a 15m kite will have more power than a 5m kite at 15kts. In flag beach kitesurfing school we are always looking for perfect 15-25kts, and this will usually be 12m and 9m kites or 9m and 7m for the lighter people. The lighter you are the less power you need so you do not need as big a kite as a larger person.

We have mentioned knots but there are other units of wind speed:

1 Knot (kts) = 1,2 Mp/h = 1,8 Km/h

THE WIND CONSISTENCY

The best wind for kitesurfing is a constant (as opposite to gusty) cross shore with the speed of 15-25 knots. Since the mother nature can not be programmed we sometimes have to kite in imperfect conditions. Apart of that it’s very important to now the three main things that cause the wind to become gusty or to swirl and change direction which can make kiting difficult and dangerous:

Buildings

We never launch or land our kites in these areas in front and behind the building as the wind is swirling round so can easily lift and drop you. Also the wind in front of the building is heading towards it so if you get lofted the direction you will go is towards the building. But how do we know where these areas are? We take the height of the building and we need to be 3 times the height in front of the building and 7 times the height behind it before we have clean wind again.

wind consistancy kitesufing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventura

Mountains

The main effect we get with mountains is called the VENTURI effect. It is the same thing as putting your finger over a tap, the water comes out quicker.  In the diagram you can see the lines are closer together in the middle of the mountains as all the air is being forced through this small gap.

wind consistancy venturi effect kitesufing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventura

wind consistancy storm cloud cumulonimbus kitesufing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventura

Clouds:

The main cloud we are looking for when kitesurfing is a Cumulonimbus. This is a thunder and lightning cloud. We need to avoid these clouds for 3 reasons.

Firstly the wind is swirling up inside the cloud and from the water towards the cloud. The kite will not lift you up into the cloud and keep taking you up but it can, again, lift you very high and drop you fast in the swirling winds.

The second problem is lightning. The famous American scientist, Benjamin Franklin, flew a kite with a key in a thunderstorm and the kite was struck by lightning proving lightning was electricity. This is the same situation except your kite is bigger. You have wet lines and you are the highest object around when flying a kite so, you need to get the kite out of the sky as soon as possible, if you see this cloud anywhere, as lightning can strike up 18km away from the cloud.

The third problem is they do not follow the wind, they are formed when a hot front and a cold front meet. This is called an occluded front and the cloud will go where ever this front is going; it tends to move up wind but can move in any direction. If you see this cloud anywhere come in and pack down.

SPACE NEEDED TO PRACTICE KITESURFING

Next look at space, as we always need to assess our setup area before we even look at going on the water. Whenever you turn up to a beach to kite surf you need to do a site assessment.

  • Is the area safe to launch and land a kite
  • Is the water safe to kite in
  • Where can I enter and exit the water normally and in an emergency

Looking at this photo, what is good about Flag Beach, what is bad about Flag Beach for setting up and launching/landing our kites? What things do we want there what do we not want?

safe beach and space kitesurfing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventura

Good for kiting:

  • The beach is wide and sandy, no rocks and reef
  • There is space to set up a kite (away from the sunbeds and umbrellas)
Bad for kiting:

  • Obstacles on the beach (sunbeds, bushes)
  • Rocks sticking out on low tide (you can use booties)

WATER CONDITIONS NEEDED TO PRACTICE KITESURFING

What are the qualities of the perfect kitesurf learning water? Again, what do we want what don’t we want?

Good water conditions:

  • Free of obstacles
  • Flat and waist deep
  • Clean and warm
  • No current (or current against wind)
Bad water conditions:

  • Reefs, rocks
  • Boats, swimmers
  • Large shore break
  • To shallow (a fall can cause injuries)

KITESUFING EQUIPMENT

Ok, so we are at the beach, it is a perfect beach for launching, we have good side shore wind and there is nothing in the water for us to injure ourselves on. We now need to look at our equipment. Firstly we look at what we call PPE, this stands for Personal Protection Equipment.

Kitesurfing Wetsuit / Neoprene

wetsuit types kitesufing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventuraWetsuits come in lots of different shapes and sizes but which one do we use? The thing to think about is if you have to swim back in when your kite or board breaks, what would you want to be wearing? At Flag Beach you could go out in a 6mm full length suit, but if you had to swim back in there is a lot of neoprene working against you whilst swimming so you will get tired very easily. However, if in the height of winter you just had board shorts and a rash vest on and had to swim back in you would get cold quickly and then tired; so in order to kitesurf comfortably you need to find a balance between the two.

If I was kitesurfing in the North Sea in the middle of winter I would want the 6m full wetsuit. Do not just wear the thickest suit you have, yes it will keep you warm but it may be too thick for the conditions. A normal summer neoprene wetsuit is 3/2 mm and typically here we use long leg short arm wetsuits. Buy the suit best suited for where you will normally kite.

Kitesurfing harnesses

harness types kitesufing theory lesson in flagbeach school fuerteventuraThere are two types of harness, seat and waist harness. A seat harness sits lower on your body and has leg straps. Seat harnesses are better when learning kiteboarding as you will have the kite at what we call 12 o’clock a lot and will be pulling the harness up, but because of the leg straps the harness can only move so far. It is not a case of once you get good you go and buy a waist harness, it is all about comfort while practicing kite. If you have a very comfortable seat harness there is no need to buy a waist harness.

Waist harnesses need to be fitted perfectly. Do not go and buy the one you like the look of, try them on and get the one that fits you best and does not move. If you want to make a minimum investment into this sport, harnesses and wetsuits are where you should not compromise on price, as if they are not comfortable you kitesurfing sessions will not be fun.

Impact Vests

This is not a “life Jacket” as a life jacket will make you float on your back if you are unconscious whereas an impact vest is filled with foam and  will only help you float. These are designed to take some of the impact from the water so that you do not injure yourself when learning kiteboarding. They are not a requirement but they can be useful, specially at the beginning when you tend to fall many times.

Helmets

Helmets are not a requirement, but if you get a board leash it is very important that you also wear a helmet.
