THE FLAG BEACH STORY


November 1987:
Ben Thomas manages to secure a licence for a watersports centre on a beach close to Corralejo. Everyone saying he was mad to open a centre "out of town" where people would have to travel to and that Corralejo Bay would be better. Originally known locally as Grandes Playas, it's now known internationally as Flag Beach.

February 1988:
A deal is struck with ALPHA, to supply boards, and the local NEIL PRYDE dealer for rigs.

April 1988:
The equipment arrives but the hut has not been finished yet.

May 1988:
The 4m x 5m hut is put up on Flag Beach and together with 3 - 4 people it is painted and prepared. The centre finally opens with 9 boards and 15 sails.


November 1988:
Centre changes to TIGA/NEIL PRYDE.

June 1989:
An extension is added to store rigs and rescue boat. The total boards now being 22 with 39 sails.



Summer 1990:
TIGA/PRYDE out, FANATIC/ART in. Now 34 boards and 70 sails.
 
 


October 1990:
A further extension is built to house more boards/rigs and to give the lads more room to work.
 


May 1991:
The school is knocked down and all Corralejo beaches are "cleared" of all beach bars and any other constructions. In the meantime Flag Beach Windsurf Centre works out of a van to continue to provide service for customers.

 
 


August 1991:
Finally after waiting for 3 months for a bit of paper we get the go ahead to build a new centre, back from the water. We have now been granted permission for a hut 19m x 6m. Work starts immmediately and continues day and night to get it finished. 5 Days later and we have a new hut.
 
 


March 1993:
Plans are put through for a second building, this time 12m x 6m..........and....... we are STILL WAITING!

July 1998:
Flag Beach Windsurf Centre celebrates 10 years and throws a Mega beach party for 1200 people, that goes on all night long.

 



August 98:
Kitesurfing is the new sport and Flag Beach starts hiring out equipment.

August 99:
Kitesurfing is an established sport and Flag Beach is one of the best places in the Canaries to do it. We now teach kitesurfing.
